What is Go SwissDrive?

Go SwissDrive is an e-bike drive system with a rear-wheel hub motor that was used by various bicycle manufacturers in Europe for many years. The system was fitted to city e-bikes, trekking e-bikes, cargo bikes, commercial e-bike fleets, special vehicles and S-pedelecs, and is still in use in numerous e-bikes today.

In contrast to a mid-drive motor, the Go SwissDrive motor sits directly in the rear wheel. The drive force is therefore transmitted directly to the rear wheel, which provides a particularly smooth, even and natural riding feel.

Go SwissDrive was discontinued in 2019. At the end of 2022, YouMo took over the repair and spare parts service so that existing systems can continue to be professionally supported.

The idea behind Go SwissDrive

In developing Go SwissDrive, the focus was on riding comfort, reliability and assistance that feels as natural as possible.

The system supports the rider exactly when extra power is needed. This creates a harmonious riding feel that stays as close as possible to normal cycling.

Its special features include:

  • Quiet operation without motor noise
  • Even assistance
  • Direct riding feel
  • High reliability
  • Low-maintenance technology

These characteristics made Go SwissDrive a popular choice for e-bikes from more than 30 different bicycle manufacturers for many years.

Where was Go SwissDrive used?

Understanding BikeBus, CAN-Bus and ANT+

Why do I need to know the system?

Over the years, different communication systems were used in Go SwissDrive. These systems control the exchange of data between the motor, display, battery and other components.

Although many components look very similar on the outside, the systems are built differently from a technical point of view and are not compatible with each other. Correctly identifying the system is therefore the first step in any repair or spare parts order.

Which communication systems are there?

Go SwissDrive uses a total of three different communication systems:

BikeBus

BikeBus is the best-known and most widespread generation of Go SwissDrive. The system was used in numerous e-bikes for many years and forms the basis of many vehicles still in use today.

CAN-Bus

The new CAN-Bus generation was introduced in 2018. Communication takes place via a different protocol from the BikeBus system. As a result, BikeBus and CAN-Bus components cannot be combined with each other.

ANT+

ANT+ was an early variant of the Go SwissDrive system used by some manufacturers – for example on the Bulls Green Mover. Here the display communicates wirelessly with the battery. Today this system is only rarely found.

You have identified your Go SwissDrive system. What now?

Use the appropriate links for your next step:

Go SwissDrive displays & docking stations

Displays and docking stations are among the most important components of a Go SwissDrive system. They form the link between rider and e-bike and enable control as well as the display of all important riding information. This includes:

  • Speed
  • Battery level
  • Assistance level
  • Trip distance
  • Total distance
  • Error messages

Over the years, different display generations were developed. Many of them look similar on the outside but differ considerably in technical terms. Correctly identifying the display and docking station is therefore particularly important.

On this page you will find out which display types there are, how to identify your model and what to do in the event of compatibility questions or defects.

Do you have a technical problem with your display or docking station?

E.g. the display won't switch on, individual buttons don't work or the battery level is shown incorrectly?

Go SwissDrive displays

Over the years Go SwissDrive has used three different display types: the LCD standard display, the EVO display and the ANT+ display.

LCD standard display

The LCD standard display is the simplest display variant from Go SwissDrive. Features:

  • small black-and-white display
  • mounted directly on the handlebars
  • easy to use
  • compact design

This display is no longer manufactured today. Spare parts are only available to a limited extent and repairs are not always possible.

If your standard display is defective, in many cases it can be replaced with an EVO display. You will find more information on this in our problem-solving hub.

Instructions: converting a standard display to an EVO display

EVO display

The EVO display is the most modern display generation from Go SwissDrive. Compared with the standard display, it offers considerably more functions and a better overview. Features:

  • large TFT colour display
  • modern user interface
  • USB port
  • Bluetooth function
  • can be used with a smartphone app
  • separate control unit
  • separate docking station

Please note that the original smartphone apps are no longer being developed today, so individual functions may be limited.

The EVO display is available in two variants: for BikeBus systems and for CAN-Bus systems. The two variants are not compatible with each other. Make sure you buy the right version.

ANT+ display

The ANT+ display was used by some e-bike manufacturers in the early years. The special feature of this system is that the display and the battery communicate wirelessly. Features:

  • wireless connection to the battery
  • early Go SwissDrive generation
  • not compatible with BikeBus
  • not compatible with CAN-Bus

The ANT+ display has been officially discontinued and is generally no longer available. In individual cases, however, we can still supply a compatible ANT+ display for certain models.

As stock is limited and compatibility has to be checked, please send us an enquiry first.

Go SwissDrive docking stations

The docking station is the holder for the EVO display. However, it does far more than simply hold it in place. The docking station connects:

  • Display
  • Control unit
  • Wiring harness
  • Motor controller

Power supply and data communication between the display and the e-bike can only be established through the docking station. As soon as the display is inserted, electrical contacts are made.

Important

Displays and docking stations of the two generations (up to 2015 and from 2016) are not compatible with each other. Always use matching components of the same generation.

Differences between Go SwissDrive docking stations

At first glance many docking stations look identical. In fact, however, there are different versions.

Difference 1: display orientation

Depending on the bicycle model, the EVO display can be mounted in different ways. “Facing the rider”: the display is aimed directly at the rider. “Facing away from the rider”: the display is mounted in the opposite direction. This results in different docking stations.

Docking station: display facing the rider
Docking station: display facing the rider
Docking station: display facing away from the rider
Docking station: display facing away from the rider

Difference 2: cable exit

The control unit can have different cable routings.

  • Side cable exit: The cable leaves the control unit at the side. Suitable for left and right handlebar mounting.
  • Hole cable exit: The cable is routed through the centre of the control unit. Suitable where there is little space on the handlebars and for special handlebar designs.

Difference 3: detachable cable or not

  • Not detachable: Standard version. The cable is permanently connected to the control unit.
  • Detachable: The cable has a plug connection. This variant was frequently used on HP Velotechnik models with Go SwissDrive.
Control unit cable detachable

Converting from ANT+ to BikeBus

The ANT+ system was fitted to some older e-bikes. Converting to BikeBus is possible in principle. However, several components have to be adapted for this:

  • Reprogram the motor
  • Replace the wiring harness
  • Install a BikeBus display
Important

After the conversion, the battery capacity can often no longer be shown on the display, because the original battery cannot communicate with the BikeBus system.

For the conversion you also need a compatible wiring harness. You will find the right wiring harness for BikeBus systems in our shop.

Go SwissDrive motors

Buying, repairing or replacing a Go SwissDrive motor? Here you will find everything important: from how it works to choosing the right replacement motor.

The Go SwissDrive motor sits directly in the rear wheel. This creates a very natural and quiet riding feel. With a nominal output of up to 400 watts (peak approx. 1,000 watts) and a torque of 45 Nm, the Go SwissDrive motor is among the most powerful rear-wheel hub motors in its class. At the same time it runs almost silently at just 18–25 dB.

The integrated torque sensor continuously measures your pedalling force and thus provides sensitive, natural assistance without jerky transitions.

Finding the right Go SwissDrive motor

Two axle types: what you need to know

Go SwissDrive motors were offered with different rear axle designs. The most important variants are Z8 and X12. The key difference lies in the axle design and the installation width of the rear wheel:

  • Z8: installation width 135 mm
  • X12: installation width 142 mm
Standard Z8 axle (10 mm)
Standard Z8 axle (10 mm)

Standard Z8 axle (10 mm)

Hollow axle 12 mm (thru-axle)
Hollow axle 12 mm (thru-axle)

Hollow axle 12 mm (thru-axle)

The X12 version is designed for frames with a matching thru-axle mount, while the Z8 version uses a different axle design.

The two variants also differ in the torque arm and how it attaches to the bicycle frame. A frame must therefore be compatible with the respective motor version not only in terms of installation width, but also in terms of the matching torque arm mount.

Individual internal components of the motor can also differ depending on the Z8 or X12 version. These include the axle, bearings, freewheel area and, depending on the motor generation, the design of the torque sensor.

When changing a frame, you should therefore check in advance which axle version and torque arm mount the new frame requires.

Can a Go SwissDrive motor be converted from Z8 to X12 or from X12 to Z8?

Yes. Many Go SwissDrive motors can in principle be converted from a Z8 to an X12 axle version, and also from X12 to Z8. Such a conversion may be necessary, for example, if the frame of a bicycle is changed and the new frame has a different rear wheel mount.

For the conversion the motor has to be dismantled and adapted to the respective axle version. Among other things, the axle with the motor winding carrier, components of the freewheel area and the corresponding torque arm are adapted or replaced.

In particular, note the different installation widths: Z8: 135 mm, X12: 142 mm. The torque arm mount also differs. The bicycle frame must therefore be suitable both for the corresponding installation width and for the required torque arm. Depending on the direction of conversion and the motor version, further internal components may be affected.

When converting from Z8 to X12, the torque sensor does not generally need to be replaced. When converting from X12 to Z8, however, the torque sensor may need to be replaced, depending on the existing version.

We check whether a specific motor can be converted, and which components are needed for it, on the basis of the existing motor version and the intended bicycle frame. For a preliminary check we ideally need a photo of the motor type plate as well as details or photos of the rear wheel and torque arm mount of the new frame.

Speed – how fast do you want to ride?

  • 25 km/h – classic e-bike variant for everyday use and leisure.
  • 35 km/h – for riders who want higher cruising speeds.
  • 45 km/h – S-pedelec variant. Observe the special legal regulations in DE and CH.

Riding character – how should the motor assist?

  • SPEED – even power delivery, ideal for longer distances.
  • POWER – higher torque, strong assistance on hills.
  • STD (Standard) – balanced compromise for everyday use

Go SwissDrive wiring harness: function, troubleshooting, measuring and replacement

The wiring harness is the connecting element of an e-bike. It links all the electrical components with each other and allows power and information to be exchanged within the system.

Here you will find out how to recognise a defective wiring harness, how to measure the individual cable sections correctly and what information we need from you so that you quickly get the right replacement wiring harness for your Go SwissDrive e-bike.

In the Go SwissDrive system, the wiring harness connects, among other things:

  • Motor
  • Battery
  • Display
  • Docking station
  • Lighting system
  • Control unit

Without a working wiring harness, the individual components cannot communicate with each other.

Go SwissDrive wiring harness at a glance
Go SwissDrive wiring harness at a glance

What is the function of the Go SwissDrive wiring harness?

  • Power supply: The wiring harness distributes electrical energy from the battery to the various components of the system.
  • Data transmission: Besides the power supply, information is also transmitted.

Is the wiring harness compatible with all e-bike systems?

No. A wiring harness must always match the respective e-bike system exactly.

What should I do if the wiring harness doesn't work?

A defective wiring harness can cause various problems. Typical symptoms:

  • Display doesn't start
  • Motor provides no assistance
  • Battery isn't detected
  • Lights don't work
  • Error messages appear
  • Assistance levels don't respond
  • Loose contacts

The error codes EC-22, EC-40, EC-0 and EC-64 on the display also frequently point to problems with cables or plug connections. You will find a detailed description of these error codes and their solutions in our problem-solving hub.

What should I check first?

Important safety note

Only disconnect plug connections when the system is de-energised. Switch off the display and put the battery into sleep mode (hold the button on the battery down for longer). Note: the wiring harness carries voltage even when the display is switched off. Especially with the CAN-Bus system, disconnecting under voltage can damage the motor electronics.

Before a wiring harness is replaced, the following points should be checked.

  1. Switch on the display. Does the display work? Yes: continue to step 2. No: check the battery and display connections.
  2. Check the plug connections. Check for: loose plugs, damaged plugs, corrosion, moisture.
  3. Check the lighting system. Do the front and rear lights work?
  4. Check the motor assistance. Does the motor provide assistance while riding?
  5. Inspect the wiring harness visually. Check for: broken cables, crushing, chafing, damaged insulation.

How do I recognise the wiring harness?

The wiring harness is usually located in the frame or runs along the frame between the battery, motor and display. A Go SwissDrive wiring harness consists of several sections.

1. Display cable

Connection between display and motor. Measurement: display plug to motor plug.

2. Battery cable

Connection between battery and motor. Measurement: end of battery plug to motor plug.

3. Junction / fork

Area where several cables branch off. Measurement: motor plug to the end of the junction.

4. Light cable

Connection to the lighting. Measurement: motor plug to the end of the light cable.

How do I measure the wiring harness?

So that a suitable replacement wiring harness can be made or selected, the individual cable sections have to be measured.

Tools required

  • Ruler
  • String or flexible tape

The string should be at least as long as the bicycle. You will find further steps on our FAQ page.

Measuring the light cable correctly

Variant 1

The rear light is controlled via the front lamp. Measurements: motor plug to front light; front light to rear light.

Variant 2

Front and rear lights are powered separately via the battery. Measurements: motor plug to front light; motor plug to rear light.

Note: Some brands have a separate light control fitted. If you are unsure which variant your e-bike has, send us a photo of your lighting system and the connections.

What information do we need?

So that we can determine the right wiring harness, we need the following details:

  • Bicycle make and model
  • BikeBus or CAN-Bus
  • Display plug (number of pins: 3 or 4)
  • Lighting system fitted?
  • Brake cut-off fitted?
  • Length of the individual cable sections

Photos of the wiring harness, the plugs and the bicycle also help with identification. Photos of the product labels on the display, docking station and battery are very helpful too, as they allow us to determine the system generation unambiguously.

Send us your details and photos directly via our service form, and we will get back to you promptly with the right wiring harness or a quote for a custom-made one.

Is it possible to install the Go SwissDrive wiring harness yourself?

In principle, yes. Installing a wiring harness yourself is possible, but it requires technical understanding and careful work. Depending on the bicycle model, various components have to be removed in order to route the wiring harness correctly. Incorrect installation can lead to malfunctions or communication problems.

When plugging and unplugging, make sure the system is de-energised (display off, battery in sleep mode), otherwise the electronics can be damaged.

Our recommendation

To save time and avoid possible difficulties, we recommend installation by our specialists. We carry out the fitting professionally and make sure all components are correctly connected to each other. If you have questions or would like to use our installation service, we will be happy to help.

Are there warranties or return options?

Our wiring harnesses are covered by the statutory warranty provisions as well as the current YouMo warranty terms. If a wiring harness has a material or manufacturing defect, we examine the case individually and support you with repair, replacement or a suitable solution.

As many wiring harnesses are individually configured or made specially for particular bicycles, we always recommend precisely identifying the existing system before ordering.

Go SwissDrive adapter cables: connecting GTC, Rosenberger & HiGo plugs correctly

Do you want to replace a docking station, display or wiring harness on your Go SwissDrive e-bike, but the plugs don't fit together? An adapter cable is often the simplest solution.

On Go SwissDrive, an adapter cable is mainly used between the docking station and the wiring harness. This allows an existing component to be reused even though the connectors don't fit together directly.

A typical case is also converting from the standard display to the EVO display: the EVO display uses a different plug, which is why you need an adapter cable for it. If your e-bike has a brake switch for regenerative braking fitted, you also need a special adapter in order to keep using this function.

Instructions: converting a standard display to an EVO display →

When is an adapter cable needed?

An adapter cable is needed when the plug connections of the docking station and wiring harness are different:

  • Docking station GTC → wiring harness Rosenberger
  • Docking station Rosenberger → wiring harness GTC
  • Docking station HiGo → wiring harness Rosenberger
  • Docking station HiGo → wiring harness GTC
Adapter cable docking station GTC to wiring harness Rosenberger

Adapter cable docking station Rosenberger to wiring harness GTC
Adapter cable docking station HiGo to wiring harness Rosenberger
Adapter cable docking station HiGo to wiring harness Rosenberger
Adapter cable docking station HiGo to wiring harness GTC
Adapter cable docking station HiGo to wiring harness GTC

Why use an adapter cable?

In many cases the complete docking station, or even the entire wiring harness, would otherwise have to be replaced. An adapter cable allows a much simpler and more cost-effective solution.

Advantages

  • reuse existing components
  • lower costs
  • less conversion work
  • faster installation
  • sustainable solution
Important – system compatibility

An adapter cable only solves the plug problem, not system compatibility. BikeBus and CAN-Bus components are fundamentally not compatible with each other – even if the plugs fit together mechanically thanks to the adapter. Always check before buying that both components belong to the same system generation.

How does an adapter cable work?

The adapter cable does not translate any data and does not change any signals. It simply connects the right contacts between two different plug systems. Simplified illustration: docking station → adapter cable → wiring harness. This allows components with different plugs to keep working together.

Which plug systems are there?

GTC M8 B-Coded

  • metal coupling nut
  • round plug
  • 5-pin connection

Typical use: BikeBus systems

Rosenberger L001

Features:

  • black round plastic plug

Placeholder: the existing “Go SwissDrive adapter cable finder” widget (shop.youmo.ch) will be embedded here.

Important note

An adapter cable only solves the problem of different plug systems. It does not replace a:

  • defective docking station
  • defective wiring harness
  • damaged plug
  • faulty electronics

Before ordering, you should therefore always check whether it really is only the plug systems that differ.

Go SwissDrive freewheel: types, maintenance & replacement at YouMo

The freewheel, also called the freewheel body, is an important component on the rear hub of a bicycle or e-bike. Its job is to decouple the connection between chain and rear wheel as soon as you stop pedalling.

This allows the rear wheel to keep turning freely without the pedals moving with it. This function is used, for example:

  • when coasting
  • when riding downhill
  • when rolling to a stop without pedalling

Without a freewheel, the pedals would have to keep turning whenever the bicycle is moving.

Go SwissDrive freewheel body
Go SwissDrive freewheel body

What is the freewheel's job on an e-bike?

On an e-bike the freewheel has another important function as well. It ensures that the motor assistance is interrupted as soon as the rider stops pedalling. As a result:

  • the motor is decoupled
  • the bicycle can roll freely
  • riding comfort is increased
  • the drive is protected

Especially with Go SwissDrive rear-wheel motors, the freewheel is an important part of the whole drive system.

How does a freewheel work?

Inside the freewheel there are small spring-loaded pawls. As soon as the rider pedals, these pawls engage in the toothing of the motor and transmit the force to the rear wheel. When pedalling stops, the pawls disengage again and the rear wheel can keep rolling freely.

Structure of a Go SwissDrive freewheel

A freewheel consists of several components. These include:

  • Freewheel body
  • Cassette mount
  • Pawl mechanism
  • Bearings
  • Seals

The cassette with the sprockets is mounted on the freewheel. The pawls ensure that force is only transmitted when you are actually pedalling.

Which freewheel variants are there?

Go SwissDrive mainly used two freewheel types. The difference lies in the axle used.

How do I recognise a defective freewheel?

A worn freewheel can cause various symptoms. Typical signs:

  • pedals spin freely
  • clicking noises when pedalling
  • dropouts while riding
  • power isn't transmitted correctly
  • freewheel jams
  • unusual noises

The earlier a defect is recognised, the lower the risk of further damage.

Why is maintenance so important?

A well-maintained freewheel protects not only itself but also the toothing of your Go SwissDrive motor.

Experience from our repair service shows that in around 40% of all cases a worn freewheel is the cause of damage to the internal toothing, often after just 8,000 to 12,000 km, depending on riding style. The freewheel is put under particular strain if you pull away briefly and then coast again, or often ride in too low a gear.

With the right care this can be avoided, or at least delayed considerably.

Particular importance with Go SwissDrive

With Go SwissDrive motors, a defective freewheel often has greater consequences than on conventional bicycles. If the pawls no longer work correctly, the toothing in the motor can be damaged. This can lead to considerably higher repair costs. A damaged or stiff freewheel should therefore be checked and replaced as early as possible.
