New rules from July 1, 2025: A turning point for cargo e-bikes in Switzerland – Heavy loads made easy
A transportation system that can move heavy loads more efficiently and in a more environmentally friendly way will become a reality from July 1, 2025. Switzerland is setting an example by adapting the regulations for cargo bikes. This brings it closer to European regulations. These changes make cargo e-bikes a groundbreaking solution in the transportation sector – for both private and business applications.
On December 13, 2024, the Federal Council took an important step for the future of e-mobility: a new regulation that will revolutionize the use of cargo e-bikes will come into force on July 1, 2025.
What exactly is changing?
- New category: heavy motorized bicycles. Vehicles with a total weight of up to 450 kg will be allowed on public roads in the future – with a moped license (category M). This means: heavier loads, fewer obstacles.
- Increased weight limit for light motorized bicycles
The new limit is 250 kg – and these vehicles still do not require a license for drivers aged 16 and over (or 14 and over with a category M license). More flexibility for everyday life!
Why is this revolutionary?
The new regulations strengthen the versatility of cargo e-bikes and make them an even more effective tool for a wide range of industries.
- Last-mile delivery: Heavier and bulkier goods can be transported more efficiently and in a more environmentally friendly way. The new rules increase the efficiency and range of cargo e-bikes, making them an attractive alternative for urban freight transport.
- Municipal services: Flexibility for tasks such as waste disposal or the maintenance of public spaces: Thanks to the higher load capacities, larger quantities of tools, materials and equipment can be easily transported, making work in urban areas easier.
- Catering and retail: optimization of supply chains in urban areas. The increased capacity of cargo e-bikes allows a greater number of deliveries in fewer trips, which saves time and money.
- Agriculture: Cargo e-bikes offer practical solutions for transporting tools, seeds, harvest products or even small machines on farms.
- Facility management: The increased load capacities enable the transportation of cleaning equipment, tools or spare parts in large building complexes, industrial plants or residential complexes.
- Craft businesses: carpenters, electricians and other craft businesses can benefit from the increased payload and modularity to transport tools, materials and spare parts in an uncomplicated and emission-free way.
Infrastructure makes all the difference
The change in the law not only introduces new categories, but also improves conditions on the road:
- Less restrictive cycle path regulations: fast e-bikes and heavy cargo bikes can move more freely in traffic. Local authorities decide where cycle paths must be used.
- New parking areas: specially designated parking spaces make urban deployments even easier.
Shaping the future of transportation
The new regulations are a strong signal for tomorrow’s mobility. Cargo bikes are becoming a real alternative in traffic – practical, sustainable and versatile. Now is the perfect moment to discover the new possibilities and help shape sustainable mobility.
