First, check whether you are eligible for funding
The BAFA subsidy for electric cargo bikes is intended for the following groups:
- All types of businesses: Whether a limited liability company (GmbH), a corporation (AG), a sole proprietorship, or a cooperative—any private business can apply for the grant. Freelancers such as doctors, lawyers, or tradespeople can also take advantage of it.
- Certain public institutions: These include, for example, colleges and universities.
Who is NOT eligible for funding?
- Cities, municipalities, and counties: These so-called local authorities and their agencies (e.g., municipal transit agencies) are excluded.
- Clubs: Clubs are also not eligible to apply for funding.
In short: The funding is intended for private companies and certain public institutions, but not for municipalities or associations.
These purchases are eligible for a subsidy
This subsidy is intended for new electric cargo bikes used in the commercial or public sector for the transport of goods.
There are two ways in which a vehicle can be eligible:
- It’s on the BAFA list: The BAFA maintains a list of models that automatically meet the eligibility requirements. If an electric cargo bike or trailer is on this list (such as your XCYC Cargo e-bikes), it is immediately eligible for funding.
- It meets certain technical requirements: Even if a model is not on the list, it may be eligible for funding if it meets certain technical criteria. These criteria are specified in detail in the BAFA guidelines.
These purchases are not eligible for funding
The BAFA subsidy for electric cargo bikes has a few restrictions. Here are the key points, explained in simple terms:
Electric cargo bikes that… are not eligible for funding
- intended for the transport of people, such as rickshaws.
- be used for personal purposes, such as shopping or commuting to work. (The subsidy is intended for commercial and public use.)
- serve as a sales booth, advertising space, or information booth.
- were not purchased, but rather leased or acquired through a hire-purchase agreement.
- be used for sharing services.
- were purchased secondhand.
- were retrofitted with an electric motor (retrofits).
- travel faster than 25 km/h (S-class cargo e-bikes).
- do not have pedal assistance and travel faster than 6 km/h (e-bikes without pedals).
The Right Steps: How to Successfully Apply for Funding
1. Get a quote for your XCYC cargo e-bike – either from the dealer or from YouMo

Very important! Before submitting an application, only a quote may be obtained, but no order may be placed. An order confirmation before the grant is received regularly leads to the rejection or reclaim of the grant.
2. Submit the BAFA grant application
From 1 October 2024, you will be able to submit your funding application via the BAFA online application portal.
The funding procedure begins with the receipt of the funding application by BAFA, which is then reviewed and approved or rejected by BAFA (application procedure or application stage).
The following steps must be taken:

3. Required documents
- Available from one of the XCYC dealers or directly from YouMo
- Project description
The project description should include a detailed description of how the cargo bike will be used (intended purpose). The description should include information about what will be transported, where it will be transported to, and why it is being transported.
- Proof of your commercial or freelance activity
E.g. business registration or assignment of a VAT number by the responsible tax office, confirmation from the tax advisor
4. Awaiting the funding decision
After a positive review, you will receive the notification of funding from BAFA.
5. Trigger order
With the notice of funding, you can finalize your order with the XCYC dealer.
6. Submit proof of use
After receiving and paying for the e-cargo bike, you submit the required documents to the BAFA to receive the subsidy.
The following steps must be taken:
Receipt of Statement of Use (Online Form) – > Confirmation of Receipt (Email) – > Review of Statement of Use -> Payment
The following documents must be submitted/uploaded together with the electronic proof-of-use form:
- Invoice(s), including advance payment invoices
- Supply contract (order or order confirmation)
- Photograph of the vehicle(s)
- Grant notifications from other public funding bodies
The grant will be paid out after the audit of the proof of use has been completed.
FAQ – Frequently asked questions about BAFA funding for e-cargo bikes 2024
The funding application must be submitted to the dealer/manufacturer before the order is placed. Applications can be submitted from October 1, 2024.
