We have compiled the most important information so that you know exactly what is being funded and who is eligible to apply.
Find out what requirements the e-cargo bikes have to meet to be eligible for funding, which purchases are excluded from funding and which steps you should follow for a successful application.
Eligibility for BAFA funding
Private companies of all legal forms, including cooperatives and freelancers, as well as public corporations and institutions such as universities, can apply for BAFA funding for e-cargo bikes.
Regional authorities (e.g. municipalities, urban and rural districts) and their institutions, as well as associations, are not entitled to apply.
Eligible purchases
The BAFA subsidy supports the purchase of e-cargo bikes and e-cargo trailers for commercial use in freight transport. To be eligible, models must either be on the official BAFA list – like our XCYC Cargo e-bikes – or meet certain technical requirements.
These include permanently installed transport options, a larger transport volume than conventional bicycles, a minimum weight of 170 kg (XCYC models offer up to 250 kg and 300 kg load capacity), as well as the requirement that the models are mass-produced and brand new.
Non-eligible purchases
BAFA funding does not apply to e-cargo bikes used for passenger transport (e.g. rickshaws) or for private purposes such as shopping or commuting. Also excluded are models that are used as sales, advertising or information stands, as well as vehicles that are leased, purchased through hire purchase or used for sharing services. Used e-cargo bikes, retrofitted models with electric motors, as well as S-cargo pedelecs (over 25 km/h) and e-bikes with an electric motor without pedal assistance (over 6 km/h) are also not eligible for funding.

Cost-efficient to operate: e-cargo bikes incur lower operating costs than motorized vehicles. They require no fuel, have lower maintenance costs and are often exempt from road tolls or parking fees, making them a cost-effective alternative.
Easy handling in urban areas: E-cargo bikes are particularly useful in urban areas because they can easily maneuver through narrow streets and low-traffic areas. They bypass traffic jams and enable fast and flexible deliveries.
High cargo capacity: XCYC e-cargo bikes have an impressive cargo capacity, making it possible to transport large and heavy loads safely. This is particularly useful for companies that regularly have to move heavy goods.
High stability and safety: Thanks to their three-wheeled design, XCYC e-cargo bikes offer additional stability, especially when driving slowly, standing still and cornering. This minimizes the risk of tipping over and increases safety for the driver and the cargo.
No need for a driver’s license: XCYC e-cargo bikes can be driven without a license. This saves costs for driver’s license training and exams and makes the bikes immediately ready for use by all employees.
Flexible loading area configuration: The wheels can be customized to the specific transportation needs of the business. Various assembly options and modular loading areas make the wheels versatile – whether for boxes, pallets or individual transportation solutions.
